We are seeking a Band 3 Maternity Care Assistant to join our community team, which provides coverage for Solihull Hospital and the adjacent area, as an integral component of our recruitment strategy.

The Maternity Care Assistant’s (MCA) responsibility is to facilitate the provision of secure, high-quality care for infants and mothers.

Operating as a member of the Community Midwifery team, the MSW will be a proficient individual. The MCA will operate under the direct supervision of a registered midwife, with the midwife’s expertise serving as a guiding principle. During pregnancy and the postnatal period, the MCA will consult with families, individual women, and groups.

To ensure the smooth operation of the Community Midwifery team, the MCA will perform a variety of responsibilities, including personal care of women and infants, provision of information and counsel on self-care, infant care, breastfeeding initiation, health promotion, clerical, educational, and housekeeping duties.

Our community team provides superior midwifery care to a diverse collection of women and families. Community midwife teams operate in named midwife models within primary care practices, children’s centers, and private residences. The Community Matron assumes leadership of the service, with each team consisting of the following members: Team Leader, Community Midwives, Maternity Care Assistant, and Community Administrators. Applicants who are appointed will receive comprehensive support and a customized orientation during their appointment.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

  • Perform clinical observations on the mother, including measurements of body temperature, pulse, blood pressure, saturation, weight, and urinalysis. Notify the midwife of any findings that deviate from the expected range.
  • To contact emergency services when necessary to ensure the safety of infants and women.
  • Perform newborn neonatal screening samples per training approved by the trust and under the supervision of the midwife.
  • To offer fundamental public health guidance, such as postnatal exercises and dietary recommendations.
