The health service administers three outstanding facilities: Alfred, Caulfield, and Sandringham. Alfred in Prahran is the location of our Intensive Care Unit.

ICU nursing at Alfred Hospital is both immensely rewarding and difficult. With state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, we treat the sickest patients of any Australian ICU.

Due to the scale and complexity of our unit, our ICU is comprised of six clinical pods that support distinct patient cohorts based on their clinical requirements. This configuration of specialized pods within a single unit is exclusive to Australian ICUs and enables you to not only specialize in one area but also cultivate your interests in a variety of specialties. As you become more specialized in your areas of interest, you will be able to select the pods in which you would like to spend the majority of your periods.

Our ICU specializes in the following areas:

• The Victorian ECMO service provides for patients requiring ECMO due to cardiac or respiratory failure.
• Victorian State Trauma Service
• State-provided adult burns in Victoria
• Heart and Lung Transplantation Service in Victoria
• Complex cardiac- including the management of patients on ventricular assist devices and impella
• Hyperbaric government function

You will:

• Assesses patients’ health care requirements. Develop, implement, and evaluate a care plan in collaboration with the patient.
• Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with each academic discipline
• Participate in and support evidence-based programs that evaluate and enhance the quality of nursing care and patient outcomes
